Tom Hanks has a new movie coming out. The legendary actor will be starring opposite Emma Thompson in Saving Mr. Banks, a film that centers around Walt Disney and P.L Travers.
Tom Hanks, who has won more acting awards than we can count, will be playing Walt Disney in the flick. Emma Thompson will be playing the famous author, P.L Travers, who is responsible for penning the popular Mary Poppins series.
Travers was very protective of the franchise and refused to sell the movie rights to Disney...at least, initially. After 14 years of wooing and promising to reserve the authenticity of the books, Travers relented.
One exchange from the trailer that really captures her angst, is set with Tom Hanks and Emma Thompson working on the music for the film.
Travers says, "Mary Poppins is not for sale. I won’t have her turned into one of your silly cartoons."
Disney responds, incorrectly, by firing back, "Says the woman who sent a flying nanny with an umbrella to save the children."
Travers, noticeably jarred, has to inform Disney that Poppins did not come to save this children.
Despite allowing Disney to bring her books to film, she was never impressed with his work as a director. The two never worked together again.
The first trailer for the film was released Thursday. The film itself has a tentative release date of 2013. The studio could be opting for a Christmas release.
Other notable actors who will be appearing in the film include: BJ Novak, Paul Giamatti and Colin Farrell.
