American Ballet Theatre Star Angel Corella Retires

Spanish dancer Angel Corella retired after 17 years with American Ballet Theatre (ABT).

Corella, 36, bid farewell to the company and his many U.S. fans with a final performance of “Swan Lake” in New York on Thursday.

"I think it's good to close a chapter, and not leave it vague," Corella said in an interview with Denverpost at the Metropolitan Opera House. "I think it's better to say this is it."

Corella joined American Ballet Theater in 1995. Less than a year after joining the company, the teenage ballerino made his debut in the leading role of Basilio in “Don Quixote,” paired with the Argentine ballerina Paloma Herrera. Soon after, he was promoted to principal.

He founded a ballet company The Barcelona Ballet in 2008. After his retirement, Corella will continue to dance with his own company in more contemporary work.
