Accused Murderer Amanda Knox and Ex Have Retrial Date Set, Case Continues in Italy

Amanda Knox, the accused murderer, and her ex have a new retrial date set. A court in Italy has determined that the case needs to continue.

Ms. Knox, who was cleared of her involvement in the 2007 death of her British roommate, Meredith Kercher, may soon have to go back to Italy. The American citizen and her ex-boyfriend, Raffaele Sollecito, have a new trial date set for September 30.

Since her 2011 acquittal, Ms. Knox has lived in Seattle. But, officials in America could extradite the young woman to Italy, in order to face new charges. It is a fear that keeps Knox up at night:

"I sit in my hotel room and cry so loud until the security calls the room, because the person next door has heard me crying. It's really hard for me to talk to people about it. It's like as soon as I allow myself to cry, I can't stop."

This didn’t stop Knox from accepting a book deal worth nearly $4 million. She also addressed this in her first televised interview:

"I've been told that in Italy, people think it's arrogant of me to sit here in the United States and have a book come out and defend myself. First of all, I find that incredibly unfair, because I have the right to defend myself. And no one can ask me to just shut up because it's convenient. But at the same time, I want to prove to them that I care about what's going on."

Even before this newest announcement, Knox was in fear of returning to Italy. She responded to journalists’ questions about returning to the country that imprisoned her:

"I don't know yet. It's a really complicated question. I mean, I'm afraid to go back there. I don't want to go back into prison."
