It is official, Jessica Lange is leaving American Horror Story after four amazing seasons. Lange will not be checking into the Hotel for Season 5. The actress had made no secret of her desire to quit the series after her contract ended, making the Freak Show her final bow.
During the recent Paleyfest celebration, Jessica Lange confirmed that she was leaving the series, stateing (via US Weekly):
"I'm done...We've had a great run here. I have absolutely loved doing these four characters that I've had the opportunity to play, and in all madness, I love the writers and Ryan and the insanity of shooting it. I've done four great characters...it's enough."
Lange had previously spoke about her plans to leave the show after the forth season, telling Entertainment Weekly :
“It ends up being a lot of time during the year being committed to something. I haven't done that for a long time. It's like doing a stage play between the rehearsal and the run. This is a 6-month commitment every year. That will be four years in a row. I want to have more time to myself I guess. Once it's over and I have a full year ahead of me with nothing to do, who knows? It might not have been the best decision. But I think four years doing something is a sufficient amount of time.”
American Horror Story creator, Ryan Murphy, also opened up about Lange’s (at the time possible) departure, tellingth Vulture :
“I think being on a television show, even a cable show for 13 episodes, is a big grind. It’s really hard work. And I bought a play that Jessica’s going to do on Broadway, something she’s always wanted to do, so we’re going to do that after Season 4. And then? I don’t know. Maybe she has a year break, or maybe I can seduce her with a part. It depends on what she wants to do. She’s always been an actress who took a lot of time between projects.”
