Whenever Farmers Field opened up in Los Angeles, the people of the city were excited at the possibility of NFL teams returning to the city. However, it has been announced that the stadium is now dead. This shouldn't be too surprising, since it was never tied to an official team. The project was doomed from the start. Also, the stadium's developer has denied any further discussions with the NFL or any teams about the subject. Instead, they are focusing on "alternative development."
The project originally started in 2010 by former LA Avengers owner Casey Wasserman and Anschutz Entertainment group president Tim Leiweke. From a business standpoint, the stadium has perfect location -- right between Los Angles Convention Cent and the Staples Center.
Originally, it was intended to house further Super Bowls. According to Yahoo Sports, however, it now looks like AEG's once great idea has fallen flat after two short months:
"Farmers Field had a prime location in downtown Los Angeles, big-time boosters, a builder with an impeccable professional sports resume, even a name and sponsor...what it did not have was an NFL team attached. And in the end that was all that mattered. Just months after it was the latest, greatest hope for bringing the NFL back to the city for the first time in 20 years, the stadium project was declared dead by its developer AEG on Monday..."
It was surprising to see something with so much going for it fall so flat. According to the LA Times, AEG has decided to focus on other business ventures:
"The sports and entertainment conglomerate is no longer in discussions with the NFL or any teams about the project, company officials said Monday... 'I think it's fair to say we have turned our attention to proceeding with an alternative development,' AEG Vice Chairman Ted Fikre said...Fikre said AEG will not seek an extension of its deal with the city, which hinges on a long-term agreement with a team."
