NBC will stage a live broadcast of "The Sound of Music" based on the original Broadway musical.
The network announced today that it will team up with Craig Zadan and Neil Meron, the producers of Broadway drama "Smash," to air a live broadcast of the classic musical. The production will be based on the original 1959 Rodgers and Hammerstein Broadway musical.
"It is our supreme pleasure to broadcast -- live -- a new version of the seminal Broadway musical 'The Sound of Music' for a whole new generation," said NBC Entertainment Chairman Robert Greenblatt in a statement.
"There used to be a tradition of broadcasting musicals live back in the 1950s and we're thrilled to do it once again with a musical that has been a family classic for five decades," Greenblatt added.
The broadcast will feature classic songs including "The Sound of Music," "Do-Re-Mi," "Climb Ev'ry Mountain," and "My Favorite Things," along with tunes from the Broadway version that aren't as well known. All the actors will be expected to sing live without prerecording or lip-syncing.
Casting will begin immediately and an air date will be announced in coming weeks.
