Two new consoles are coming out very soon--the Xbox One and the PlayStation 4. With release dates and price details announced, it appears that PS4 is leading the pack.
Its been awhile since hardcore gamers have been provided a new console. Sure, Wii U was a recent release but it really can’t compare, processing wise, with the other consoles.
Microsoft hasn’t released a new Xbox since 2005. For Sony, it was 2006. But now, both video game titans are slating a November release for their upcoming systems.
When it comes to features, the two consoles are fairly similar. Their price, however, varies significantly.
The Xbox One will be retailing for $499. PlayStation has them beat by $100, launching their system at a competitive price of $399.
In the end, it may be price that wins out. Activision CEO, Eric Hirshberg, released the following statement:
“If you do a focus group of a gazillion people and you show them two prices for two competitive products, 100 percent always prefer the lower price. Microsoft is going to have to win the hearts and minds and convince people that the higher price point is worth it, and that it provides really meaningful capabilities that will be meaningful to consumers.”
Another deciding factor, though to a much smaller extent, will be design. While nothing has been confirmed, Microsoft has commented about their design changes. Ramiro Torres, the creative director of design for the Xbox One, issued the following statement:
"We wanted to think from a holistic perspective. Its design has to make an appropriate statement that reflects its capability as an all-in-one entertainment system."
