Sydney Opera House Names New CEO

Louise Herron has been appointed as the new chief executive of the Sydney Opera House, effective August 6, 2012.

Trained as a lawyer, Herron has been chair of the Australia Council's Major Performing Arts Board since June 2011 and previously chaired Sydney's Belvoir St Theatre for ten years.

"It is an honor to be entrusted with running the Sydney Opera House, a building recognized by UNESCO as a masterpiece of human creative genius," said Herron, commenting on her appointment.

Herron will be the first female to head Australia's iconic performing arts center since it opened in 1973. She replaces Richard Evans who resigned last February after four years in service to become managing director of another Sydney tourism favorite, BridgeClimb.

As the venue is undergoing multimillion-dollar construction work to improve theatre facilities and provide underground truck access, fundraising is expected to be a large part of Herron's leadership.
