Gay Michael Sam 'Dancing With the Stars' on Hit ABC Program After Fired from NFL

Since he announced that he was openly gay, Michael Sam has been one of the most talked about free agents in the NFL. Also, the fact that he has adamantly insinuated the reason he was let go from the Rams and Cowboys was because of his sexuality, has stirred up quite the controversy. Now, it has officially been announced that Sam will be competing on ABC's popular show Dancing with the Stars. Even though Sam has stated he is still very interested in football, this latest stunt has people questioning his commitment.

Before his time as a free agent, Sam played college ball for the University of Missouri. During his time there, he earned the prestigious title of South Eastern Conference Defensive Player of the Year.

Since then, however, Sam's football career has been non-existent. Some say it is because he lacks the skill to play as a professional. Yet, as Sam pointed out, it is most likely because he is the first openly gay NFL player.

Now, Sam has told his story to the world and has even done a tell-all interview with Oprah. In turn, according to the NFL, Sam has elevated to an unexpected level of celebrity:

"2014 seventh-round draft pick Michael Sam is taking his talents to the stage as a contestant on Dancing with the Stars. Cast members, including the 25-year-old defensive end, were announced Tuesday on Good Morning America. Sam, who last year became the first openly gay NFL player to be drafted, said, via his Twitter account, that he's still preparing for a career in the NFL. [Saying] 'Football remains my unquestioned number one priority...'"

It's always good to see someone turn around a bad situation. However, as is suggested by TMZ Sports, this signing with ABC has the football world questioning Sam's devotion:

"Here's the problem. Sam who insinuated he was cut from the NFL because he is gay, has vowed to get back in the league and said he'd take part in the first-ever veteran's combine on March 22...But Sam needs to prove he has what it takes, and we're thinking some of the owners might question his commitment if he's focusing on the rumba rather than rumbling..."
