It was supposed to be a banner week for Amy Poehler. The actress started the week off behind the Weekend Update desk with her old pal Tina Fey, at the Saturday Night Live 40th Anniversary special. Than Poehler was honored at the second annual Unite 4:humanity gala on Thursday. However, Poehler didn’t feel celebrating at the event. Poehler and the rest of the Parks and Rec cast and crew are reeling from the death of writer and producer Harris Wittels. Wittels was found dead on Thursday, February 19, 2015 of an apparent drug overdose.
During her speech Thursday night, Amy Poehler spoke about her fallen friend, Harris Wittels, telling the audience (via USA Today):
"Today, I lost a friend. I lost a dear, young man in my life who was struggling with addiction and who died -- just a few hours before I came."
Poehler went on to talk further about Wittels:
"I'm sharing it with you because life and death live so close together, and we walk that fine line everyday. When things happen in our lives, we turn to the people that we love and we look to our community and our family for support, and we lean on people, in a hope that we will ease our pain."
"So, I don't really feel like telling any jokes. I'm kind of sad, and it's been really great to be here tonight and listen to all of you, to be inspired by the good work that you do and be reminded why we live in this bizarre planet called Hollywood. It's very strange."
