Symphony Space February Lineup Includes 'Night Out With Richard Hell' Featuring Donald Cumming of The Virgins and 'The Love Show With Helga Davis' Performances by Carla Cook, Tomas Cruz and More

February at Symphony Space is made for lovers. The space is presenting two shows guaranteed to spice up your life. The Leonard Nimoy Thalia will host Night Out with Richard Hell, featuring Donald Cummings of The Virgins with his new band, Feb. 12, and The Love Show with Helga Davis, a Valentine’s Day celebration, Feb. 13.

New York punk icon Richard Hell developed Night Out as a way to feature new artists whom he has become interested in. Each evening, Hell interviews the artist he chose, followed by the artist's performance. This evening, Hell welcomes musician Donald Cumming.

Born in Manhattan, Cumming has always been a part of the arts scene in downtown New York City. After a foray in the film world, acting in 2006 Sundance short-prize winner Bugcrush, he started handing out home recordings of his music, forming The Virgins soon after. Before even playing a live show, the band signed a deal with Atlantic Records. Their self-titled debut in 2008 was a success, leading the band through worldwide tours before going on hiatus due to inner conflict.

The Virgins returned in 2013 and released Strike Gently on Julian Casablancas's Cult Records. But after just one album cycle, which saw them tour much of the U.S. and Europe, return to late-night TV on The Tonight Show and play two arena tours opening for The Killers, the group mysteriously disbanded. Cumming will release his solo album in 2015 on Washington Square Records.

Described in a press release as part concert, part performance piece, The Love Show features acclaimed singer and WNYC/WQXR/Q2 radio host Helga Davis. The night will consist of a collection of New York’s most powerful and soulful vocalists singing classic love songs, such as Cole Porter, Marvin Gaye and Bill Withers. Performers include Carla Cook, Tomas Cruz, Marcelle Davies-Lashley, Josette Newsam-Marchak and James Staten with music director and keyboardist Adam Klipple.

Night Out Feb. 12 and The Love Show Feb. 13 will take place at Symphony Space’s Leonard Nimoy Thalia Theater. Visit the Symphony Space website for tickets.
