Sherlock & Dr Strange Benedict Cumberbatch Drops Accidentally “Racist” Slur in Interview [APOLOGY]

You don’t have to be a regular Sherlock Holmes to know that “colored” (or “coloured” if you are in the UK) is an outdated and offensive term. However, Sherlock star Benedict Cumberbatch (The Imitation Game, Marvel’s Dr Strange, Star Trek 2: Into Darkness) made the mistake of using the term in an interview. Now Benedict is apologizing for his comments.

While trying to speak to the opportunities for black British actors to make it in America, Benedict Cumberbatch accidentally used an outdated racist term. During an interview with PBS’ Tavis Smiley, Cumberbatch used the term “colored,” stating (via Independent):

“I think as far as coloured actors go, it gets really different in the UK, and a lot of my friends have had more opportunities here [in the US] than in the UK, and that's something that needs to change.”

Now Benedict Cumberbatch has released an apology, owning up for his mistake (via The Guardian):

“I’m devastated to have caused offence by using this outmoded terminology. I offer my sincere apologies. I make no excuse for my being an idiot and know the damage is done.”

What do you think of Benedict Cumberbatch’s comments? Were they racist? How do you feel about his apology? Let us know your thoughts on the subject in the comments section at the bottom of the page.
