The Miss Universe contest is one of the largest beauty pageants in the world. This time around, surprisingly, there were no major gaffes during the talent portion of the show. However, Miss Canada's tacky and extravagant hockey-themed dress did fill the void for the shows biggest screw up. Also this year, there was some heated drama between Miss Israel and Miss Lebanon over, you guessed it, a selfie.
Miss Universe is one of three contests hosted by the Miss Universe Organization. It is also coupled with Miss World and Miss Earth -- all of which are national-level competitions. The organization is a New York-based partnership between NBC and Donald Trump.
It was founded in June of 2002.
The whole event stretches across a two-week period, and originally the main pageant took over a month to judge. The event is meant to represent each individual country and show what each nation has to bring to the table.
Most people tune in to see the beautiful women and their glamour. However, others like to watch just for the "mess ups." According to TMZ Sports, this year didn't hold many gaffes, but Miss Canada's dress is an honorable mention:
"The "National Costume" round of the Miss Universe pageant went down [and] contestants basically dressed up as stereotypes from their home countries. Miss France wore a beret. Miss Great Britain dressed up like the Queen's Guard. And Miss Canada...hockey sticks for wings, hockey net around the crotch, hockey shoulder pads, hockey skates, working hockey scoreboard attached to her back...and Stanley Cup headpiece."
When beautiful competitive ladies are cooped up in close quarters for long periods of time, drama tends to start. According to Salon, this year's controversy starred Miss Lebanon and Miss Israel:
"After achieving the rare feat of making it through the talent portion without incident, a new controversy has emerged from the thorny geopolitical quagmire that is the Miss Universe pageant, after Miss Israel Doron Matalan Instagrammed a controversial selfie which featured her sitting next to Miss Lebanon Saly Greige, as well as Miss Slovenia and Miss Japan. After Lebanese media criticized the selfie, Miss Lebanon responded by posting the exact same picture with Miss Israel cropped out."
