For Meredith Monk, her unique blend of singer/dancer meditations for the stage, On Behalf of Nature, is just another phase in her slow-evolution as an artist -- the portrait of which can be found in her long career but also in her most recent endeavors.
Avant-garde might be an understatement, but as Wondering Sound indicates about the performance, Monk and her usual suspects of singers and dancers circulate around the stage in "moving pools of light, waving one arm in tight circles and quietly hooting to an accomplishment of echoing bells."
The production took to BAM's Harvey Theatre in early December and got an exemplary write up from Alex Ross in The New Yorker. Her voice, if you aren't in the know, is an instrument all its own. Every timbre and small nuance of the human voice, Monk has honed in on.
Earlier in her career, Monk and her generation took to Manhattan's lower sector and colonized it into an art district. Having done programs of Steve Reich and Pauline Olivero, the singing artist has carved out a sonic niche all her own.
So check out the Ross piece on Monk's latest but in the meantime get cultured with her a mini documentary of her below.
