Ardea Arts, who's goal is to redefine and revitalizing opera for the twenty-first century, will present a preview presentation of the space opera, “The Three Astronauts,” at Laguardia Arts High School.
“The Three Astronauts” performance is based on the book by Umberto Eco & Eugenio Carmi and is created by three teams of composers and librettists from each of the countries represented in the story: Russia, China and the USA, and a linguist-anthropologist working with them on their Martian encounter. The show will tell the story of how three astronauts who started as competitors work together to become allies, explore their common humanity and reach across the abyss of difference to embrace each other. The story will be told in four languages: English, Russian, Chinese and Martian. "The Three Astronauts" is the brainchild of Grethe Barrett Holby, founding Artistic Director of Ardea Arts, who created the concept and direction of the space opera.
The event will also be a collaboration with award-winning teacher Neal L. Singh and his AP Science students who have created a mobile application called "Reach for the Mars,” as a part of the STEM "Educate to Innovate" Program, which promotes education and stimulates curiosity in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics.
In addition to the sneak preview of the opera, the event the event will feature a discussion about human space exploration and the confluence of art and technology.
The preview will take place in the library of Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Art in New York on Jan. 15 at 5 p.m. Attendance is by invitation only. Please contact Ardea Arts at (212) 431-7039 or email knox@ardeaarts.com to reserve.
