Sacramento Kings Owner Vivek Ranadive FIRES Michael Malone, Chris Mullin Declines Coach Offer

After Michael Malone was fired on Sunday, the Sacrament Kings owner Vivek Ranadive seriously needs to hire a new coach. At first Ranadvie was adamantly prodding his friend, advisor and basketball legend, Chris Mullin to take the job. However, recent reports suggest Mullin has turned down that offer.

Second year head coach Michael Malone was fired from the Sacramento Kings for failing to live up to expectations and for having conflicting philosophical ideals. Seeing as this is only Ranadive's second year as well, one might think Malone deserved more time to get things moving.

However, last year's significantly negative win/loss ratio proved to be too much.

So with Malone gone, the time has come to fill his shoes. Earlier in the week, it looked like Ranadive's friend and advisor Chris Mullin was a sure thing.

He is a two-time Olympic gold medalist and Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame inductee. According to Yahoo Sports, Ranadive thinks Mullin has what it takes:

"Owner Vivek Ranadive [gave] serious consideration to hiring Chris Mullin to coach the Sacramento Kings. In the wake of Michael Malone's firing on Sunday night, Ranadive has been soliciting counsel on Mullin's candidacy and has grown increasingly intrigued with the kind of acumen and star power Mullin, an ownership adviser for the Kings, could bring to the franchise." The general manager himself even said, "All [Mullin] has to decide is that's what he wants and the job is his..."

Well, unfortunately for Vivek and Sacramento Kings' fans, Mullin decided he, in fact, did not want the job. Reported on by NBC New York, The Kings are going to have to wait until next year:

"Kings owner Vivek Ranadive tried his hardest to get Mullin to move into a coaching role for the first time in his post NBA-playing career, sending signals to team officials that Mullin was ready to take the post and would deploy an up-tempo offense the owner wants his team to play, all the pushing and prodding didn't work in the end. Mullin...could wind up taking over the coaching duties after the season..."
