Joanna Newsom has announced that she's working on some new material as a follow up to 2010's Have One on Me, in an interview with Dazed Digital. The musician said that working on Paul Thomas Anderson's upcoming Inherent Vice caused her to put music on the back burner for the time being.
An adaptation of Thomas Pynchon's novel of the same name, Newsom appears in the film and narrates, providing the voice for the trailer. Apparently, the clip caused a stir on the internet.
Scored by Radiohead's Jonny Greenwood, the California songwriter said that the movie was "so incredibly rewarding and fun," and it "did maybe deter some of my music work for a while."
"But it was totally worth it," she adds.
The novel, published in 2009, follows the exploits of Larry 'Doc' Sportello (played by Joaquin Phoenix), an irreverent private detective that navigates his way through the aftermath of the Manson murders.
And according to Dazed, Newsom was asked about the film's contemporary relevance, she said: "I think the film drums up a sense that dark forces are at work behind the scenes, and that's a fear that many people I know struggle with, particularly in the States right now."
"There's an incredible sense of — at the risk of sounding melodramatic — a conspiracy," she continued.
Until then, we have the Inherent Vice trailer below (premiering December 12) while Newsom writes some new material.
