Nothing is more inspiring than watching a young athlete who is driven and level headed. Moreover, nothing is more unfortunate than when one of these beloved role models suffers. This is the case with 19-year-old Lauren Hill, whose dreams of professional basketball were in sight. Unfortunately, she has reportedly started receiving hospice services, as the symptoms of her inoperable brain cancer have worsened.
Lauren started to make a name for herself as the star player of her high school in Indiana. Last year, she committed to play ball at Mount St. Joseph.
However, shortly after her season started she was diagnoses with a rare brain cancer that usually only affects children 5-7.
Hill did not handle the news how one would expect. She didn't let it knock her down, and she didn't let it crush her spirit. Instead, she refused to give up on life and on basketball.
According to WTHR, her condition is rare, but even more rare Is Laurens will to carry on:
"[Lauren] recently learned she had a rare inoperable pediatric brain cancer called DIPG - Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma - that gives her a near-zero chance of survival. It grows quickly and attacks the nervous system. When she was diagnosed last November, doctors gave her 18 months to live." Lauren responded with, " 'Can I still play basketball?' Lauren now plays basketball for a small college in Cincinnati. She wants her remaining days to be spent raising awareness for this rare form of cancer..."
Lauren has not allowed her ailment to change who she is a person and will be remembered for her unbelieveable strength and character.
Sadly, Yahoo Sports tells readers that her symptoms have been getting worse, and she is now receiving in home hospice treatment:
"Hill is experiencing more severe symptoms...Her headaches and nausea are flaring up more frequently. She's having a tougher time sleeping through the night. And her balance issues are becoming more pronounced...to cope with those issues, Hill has begun to receive hospice care at home..."
Astonishingly, she continues to show strength way past her years with statements like, "Why stop? Why give up on life? Why not keep going?'"
She is a truly one of a kind, and children all across the nation will continue to look up to her, and people like her for a long time.
