Genée International Ballet Competition 2013 to be held in September in Glasgow, Scotland

Genée International Ballet Competition 2013 will be held this year in Glasgow, Scotland in September. The competition will be held with association with the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland and Scottish Ballet.

The judges for the Final will be Darcey Bussell CBE, Retired Principal ballet dancer, Kevin O'Hare, Royal Ballet Director, and Christopher Hampson, Scottish Ballet Artistic Director.

RAD president Darcey Bussell, "The Genée is an extraordinary experience for any student, due to the talent it attracts. I am very excited to be part of the judging panel this year, as it is one of the largest annual competitions and is recognised around the world by everyone in dance. Past winners have gone on to have fulfilling careers in the best companies around the world."

The winners will be selected from rising stars on the ballet scene. Competitors will perform Variations choreographed by Robert Binet, a Royal Ballet Choreographic Apprentice. Binet will choreograph Variations for female and male dancers.

Binet expressed his excitement saying, "I am very excited and honoured to be creating the Variations for the 2013 Genée International Ballet Competition. The opportunity to work with - and to have my work interpreted by - so many brilliant young dancers is a truly invaluable one. I look forward to meeting and learning from both the candidates and the many luminaries of the ballet world who will be involved in the competition."

The competition will start September 20 and will run till September 29. Public performances will take place at the New Athenaeum Theatre on September 26-27. The final will take place on September 29 at the Theatre Royal Glasgow.

The tickets will be available in April.

Genée International Ballet Competition is named after the Academy's founder Dame Adeline Genée and is to reward standards of excellence in ballet dancers internationally. The first Genée International Ballet Competition took place in 1931, and since then became one of the most prestigious international competitions.
