New Disney Down Syndrome Movie Princess Request After Real Life Homecoming Queen Crowned? [UPDATE]

There has been a lot of clamoring for Disney to release a new movie featuring a hero or princess with Down syndrome. This latest request comes after a student with Down syndrome was recently crowned homecoming queen in the town of Orlando, Florida.

While Disney has been making cartoons that feature princes and princesses for decades now, it's just been in the past few years that the animation giant has looked to diversify their heroes/heroines.

And now a California couple is hoping that Disney will create a protagonist that has Down syndrome, as Huffington Post reports:

"The famed animation studio doesn't have a leading character with Down syndrome. A couple from California's Bay Area is hoping to change that...Keston Ott-Dahl and her wife, Andrea, are parents to Delaney Skye, a 15-month-old girl with Down syndrome...Keston recently took action and went to Care2.com to launch a petition aimed at getting Disney to introduce a new hero or heroine her daughter can look up to."

Disney has yet to respond to the online petition, however, this may soon change. The petition that launched just a short time ago has nearly 50,000 signatures and is growing daily.

Though Disney hasn't selected a princess with Down syndrome yet, the student body of The First Academy recently elected a homecoming queen with DS.

Ashley Strube made history this week by becoming the first homecoming queen with Down syndrome and the school's principal wasn't the least bit surprised:

"Earlier in the week, the upper classes at The First Academy chose - through a vote - Strube as their homecoming queen. But the announcement wasn't made until Friday night...The First Academy's Head of School Steve Whitaker said he wasn't surprised the student body picked Strube as the homecoming queen. She's known around school for her big personality and her big smile."

What do you think about the latest petition? Isn't it about time for Disney to create a hero or heroine that has Down syndrome?
