Russell Wilson, who may as well be the face of the NFL right now despite his team's shocking 3-3 start, hangs out with white guys and does tons of commercials. He is, let's be honest, treated like a white guy by the media. In light of the Percy Harvin trade, rumors have begun to circulate that this is kind of a problem for some members of the Seahawks. Is there an element of racial tension amongst Seahawks teammates? Is the locker room divided between Russell Wilson supporters and an anti-Wilson faction who feel that he's not "black enough"?
Bleacher Report's Mike Freeman says in a recent article that there is talk of division in the locker room along racial lines, with certain African-American players supposedly having a problem with quarterback Russell Wilson's squeaky clean image.
The recent trade of Percy Harvin to the Jets has fueled speculation about a possible rift in the Seattle roster (via The Big Lead):
"Players said Harvin was an accelerant in a locker room that was quickly dividing between Wilson and anti-Wilson... There is also an element of race that needs to be discussed. My feeling on this-and it's backed up by several interviews with Seahawks players-is that some of the black players think Wilson isn't black enough."
But Wilson himself says none of that is true (via NFL.com):
"There's no division in our locker room. There's none at all... If anything, I think we've continued to build, continued to grow... I believe the guys that we have in the locker room believe that we can go 1-0 (each week), that we still can be a championship team. Those are the guys that we have sitting in this room every day."
It may take weeks, or even months to learn whether there is any truth to these theories, but for now, Seattle might better focus more on winning games and returning to the Super Bowl than worrying about whether Wilson is black enough.
