After the Colts' 27-0 shutout of the Cincinnati Bengals, Andrew Luck commented that he's just as much a fan of the sport as he is a participant, particularly when he's watching his defensive teammates from the sideline. But he's also a bit unusual for a pro quarterback. He's reportedly a big nerd, having read all the novels in the Game of Thrones/Song of Ice and Fire series, but he's also a big technophobe. Luck has apparently never owned a smartphone, but instead still relies on his trusty flip phone.
Earlier this month, a profile on Colts' quarterback Andrew Luck revealed a few strange idiosyncrasies, like his love of logic puzzles and his refusal to watch Game of Thrones on HBO, lest it interfere with his perception of the novels.
But perhaps the most revealing tidbit, and certainly the piece of information that has generated the most headlines, is that the 24-year old Luck still rocks a flip phone (via Men's Journal):
"... Samsung flip phone of the kind used by grandmas and technophobes. Luck has never owned a smartphone, and when his previous flip phone broke several months back, he simply went on Amazon and bought a new one for 10 bucks. 'It gets the job done,' he says."
Slightly less strange, and yet still a bit unusual is Luck's extremely high Football IQ, which stems from a combination of his intellect and his enthusiasm toward the sport (via NFL.com):
"I'm just like a fan watching the game, I might as well just be a fan when our defense is out there."
Being a fan helps Luck analyze the game, which ultimately helps him process the mounds of information he must deal with as a modern quarterback. The complex systems that often comprise an NFL team's playbook usually need a professor to interpret.
Fortunately for the Colts, they have Professor Luck. Just don't try to send an e-mail to his phone.
