The Green Bay Packers are on a roll, and quarterback Aaron Rodgers is on his way to having a fantastic season. He and Randall Cobb, one of his favorite targets, hooked up six times on Sunday on the way to Green Bay's 38-17 win over the Carolina Panthers. Cobb's sensational game was only mildly set back by getting doused with ketchup when celebrating his touchdown. After the game a bowtie-wearing Cam Newton addressed the press, saying that he knew he and his team needed to do better.
Getting an early lead on Carolina certainly forced them out of their run-oriented game plan (via NFL.com):
"We had 21 first-quarter points ... which made them one-dimensional. Especially with the way that Cam ran the ball last week."
Rodgers' mobility out of the pocket, combined with his chemistry with his receiving corps, makes scrambling a part of Green Bay's scheme, rather than a chaotic disaster that threatens to ruin a play if protection breaks down.
According to receivers coach Edgar Bennett, there are rules to the Green Bay scramble, and a big part of Cobbs' successful relationship with Rodgers is his ability to get open during those situations (via Milwaukee-Wisconsin Journal Sentinal):
"It always comes down to being on the same page with Aaron, having the ability to anticipate... He can create separation. He's an extremely instinctive football player. Some of those qualities start to come out."
With six receptions and 121 yards and a touchdown, Randall Cobb and his ketchup-stained jersey were a big part of Green Bay's offensive slaughter this Sunday.
And at 5-2, Green Bay is looking to finish strong on their way to the playoffs, especially compared to the Seahawks and 49ers, who ended up numbers 1 and 2 in the NFC last year.
