Microsoft C.E.O. Satya Nadella Apologizes for Saying Women Shouldn’t Ask For Raises After E3 Xbox One Rape Joke

If The Xbox One’s E3 2013 “ Just let it happen,” rape joke wasn’t bad enough, Microsoft struck another great blow for misogyny when the company’s new C.E.O, Satya Nadella, said that women shouldn’t ask for raises. Now Nadella has officially, and seemingly sincerely, apologized for his comments.

Satya Nadella has since spoken to USA Today about the remorse he feels for his comments:

“My answer to that one question, which I interpreted super narrowly, was just wrong, because I answered by my own experience of how I managed my career. But the mistake is to take your own personal experience and project it on half of humanity. It's just insensitive."

However, something good did come out of his insensitive comments. They have caused the company to examine their own hiring and promoting practices:

"It turns out we don't have disparity, it's always a tight band of 0.5%.I feel good about that, but it still doesn't answer the question of velocity of promotions, of whether there are enough women and minorities in senior ranks. Those are the things that we've got to work on."

Microsoft also came under fire during the 2013 E3 expo, after a male gamer, demoing Killer Instinct, told a female gamer to “Just let it happen,” when his character was overpowering hers. Following the remarks, vice president Phil Spencer, released a statement to the press about the incident (via CBS News):

"Yesterday, during the Xbox E3 briefing, one of our employees made an off the cuff and inappropriate comment while demoing 'Killer Instinct' with another employee. This comment was offensive and we apologize. At Microsoft, being open and respectful with others is central to our code of conduct and our values. Bullying and harassment of any kind is not condoned and is taken very seriously. We remain committed to make gaming fun for everyone, and in that effort, we must lead by example."
