Washington Redskins coach Jay Gruden has been on an odyssey of sorts this season. The promise-filled Robert Griffin III has succumbed once again to injury. His replacement, Kirk Cousins has been less than impressive. So fifth-year veteran and third-string quarterback Colt McCoy got his second chance in the sun on Sunday, grinding out a win over the Tennessee Titans 19-17. It appears now that McCoy has the starting job in Washington until RG3 gets back.
Jay Gruden was very happy with Colt's ability to come in as a third string player and bring home a win. He also likes Colt's attitude (via Washington Post):
"He is very poised. He is a great competitor. I feel like he is going to get us in the right play and make the right throw. You know, he has had some opportunities to succeed in the past as a starter and had some rough patches, but he is here for a reason, and I've always liked his demeanor."
After a brief stint starting for Cleveland, McCoy was relegated to the bench once again, but when the opportunity presented itself once more, he was ready (via NFL.com)
"It's been two years, and I don't want to get emotional. But I'm just thankful that I've hung in there and kept fighting... [On the final drive] I looked them in the eye and said, 'Hey, I'm going to do my job. You do yours, and we're going to win this game.'"
While Washington is still just 2-5, perhaps they will have a bit of pep in their step with a new quarterback and a bit of momentum.
Although we all wish RG3 a speedy recovery, obviously. Then again, if Colt McCoy can string together a couple of wins, who's to say Gruden won't go with the hot hand?
