Brian Hoyer's Job Safe For Now: Browns QB Won't Be Fired In Favor of Johnny Manziel Despite Loss to Jaguars

Jacksonville won their first game of the season against the Cleveland Browns, a team that has shown promise, despite their 3-3 record. Brian Hoyer, whose six wins in 9 games as a Cleveland starter put him way ahead of his predecessors, nevertheless still faces a threat in rookie quarterback Johnny Manziel. Coaches say, however, that Hoyer is still their man. Coach Mike Pettine isn't about to fire one of the winningest QB's in Cleveland History. His job is safe, for now.

Conventional wisdom said that Hoyer's job would likely be safe as long as he kept winning. But the Cleveland coaching staff trusts the Destroyer and wants to give him a chance to run his team (via NBC Sports):

"Brian is still firmly our starter. Nothing's changed. Each week we make the decision as to if we want to include Johnny in the plan. It was discussed briefly [pulling him], but it was a situation where we still wanted to...at least try to end the game with Brian on a positive note."

Cleveland ultimately won't be big enough for both Hoyer and Manziel, but for now, Manziel is definitely a part of the Browns' offensive package, albeit purely as a backup (via Cleveland Plain Dealer):

"So if the situation this week maybe calls for him to play some then that will be the case. But we're not going to hit the panic button after one loss. While we know that the quarterback position needed to be more productive, it was more symptomatic of the entire offense.''

Hoyer's poor play Sunday won't get him fired after one game, which is good to know. But if he can't keep up with the solid play he has shown thus far, look for Johnny Jam Boogie to finally get his chance.
