After a turnaround season last year, the UNC Tarheels are trying to rebuild some of that momentum. They certainly posted an impressive win over Georgia Tech Saturday night. North Carolina quarterback Marquise Williams led his team to victory in a shootout against the Yellow Jackets, with a final score of 48-43. His four touchdown passes came at just the right times, though neither team's defense seemed quite able to stop the other.
UNC, just 3-4 after beating Georgia Tech, are hoping to regain the mojo that helped them win six of their last seven games last season (via ESPN):
"This might have been a season-saving win for the Tar Heels, who started the year in the Top 25 with hopes of winning the ACC's Coastal Division. They hadn't won since holding off San Diego State here on Sept. 6, giving up 70 points in an ugly loss at East Carolina, and 50 points in losses at Clemson and Notre Dame."
Meanwhile, Georgia Tech's momentum seems to be headed in the opposite direction, having now dropped two games in a row (via SB Nation):
"Georgia Tech opened the season a surprising 5-0, following up easy non-conference victories over Wofford, Tulane and Georgia Southern and more impressive wins over conference foes Virginia Tech and Miami. With victories over two of the teams expected to be in competition for the divisional crown, the Yellow Jackets suddenly found themselves in the position of the favorites, and then immediately dropped a game to Duke."
These middling ACC teams may have a lot going for them, but they are both going to have to tighten up on defense before they can hope to rise in the ranks. Or just wait until basketball season.
