There was one more chapter written in the great Giants/Eagles rivalry Sunday, but it didn't go the way the Giants wanted. The Eagles shut New York out 27-0, while Philly coach Chip Kelly had a little something to say in response to the massive amount of trash talk done by the Giants during the week prior. Kelly apparently told reporters that culture wins games.
Coaching philosophy is as wide and varied as the number of people who wield a clipboard and headset every fall. Each one of those people weighs personnel, attitude, physicality, strategy, luck and execution with their own personal outlook.
Eagles coach Chip Kelly attributed his dominance over the rival Giants to attitude. According to Kelly, the proper mindset is more important than X's and O's, all things being equal (via NJ.com):
"Culture wins football. Culture beats scheme every day."
That seems especially applicable considering some of the similarities between the two teams' new-look, pass-oriented offenses.
Giants' quarterback Eli Manning definitely seems to like the wide open look (even though it didn't work so well against Philly) (via New York Times):
"We've shaken some things up, and that's probably a good thing. That puts some pressure on the defense. You kind of put all your weapons out there at the same time. We do that more now."
Of course the Eagles don't simply rely on spunk. When it comes to game day, you've got to bring it, and you've got to know what you're doing. Giants' rookie Andre Williams learned the hard way that Philly can still scheme and tackle (via McCall.com):
"I guess you could call it a rude introduction. I think we just didn't execute like we wanted to. You've got to give it up to the Eagles defense. They played a great game and were getting in the backfield. We just have to get back in the film room and figure out what went wrong."
