Godfather Star James Caan Says 1993's The Program Was Vulgar, Football Movie Shows Steroids, Sexual Assault, Ugly Underbelly of College Sports

James Caan has gone soft since becoming a granddaddy, it seems. The Godfather star was recently seen at a restaurant in LA and squirmed uncomfortably when someone asked him about The Program. The guy who was in the freaking Godfather all of a sudden has a problem with sex and violence. The 1993 football movie The Program showed rampant steroid use, sexual assault, payola and the ugly underbelly of college sports, and James Caan called it vulgar. Granted, but he was in the dang Godfather!!!

Last year was the Twentieth anniversary of the movie, which seems to be highly relevant given the latest Sports Center coverage (via The Hollywood Reporter):

"If that doesn't ring any bells, The Program was a 1993 cinematic ode to the NCAA gridiron starring James Caan alongside a young Halle Berry and Omar Epps that promised to expose the grimy underbelly of pigskin practices."

A TMZ reporter asked actor James Caan if he felt the movie was ahead of its time (via TMZ):

"Think about it ... sexual assault cover-ups, troubled Heisman Trophy candidates, corruption, PEDs, players taking money ...the list goes on. But not only does Caan say it WASN'T ahead of it's time, he also said the flick was 'vulgar.'"
