Lang Lang, Nikolaus Harnoncount and the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra have just released their first recording together--a Mozart tribute, of sorts. Entitled The Mozart Album, the two-disc project came courtesy of Sony Classical on September 30.
“I’ve never seen anyone with such a passionate way of working, or such authenticity,” said Lang Lang on working with Harnoncourt.
“He has a way of explaining the music that takes me straight to the time it was composed.”
Harnoncourt typically works with 17th and 18th century music, so the focus on Mozart was a natural choice.
“It’s rare to find someone who is so open-minded,” said Harnoncourt on Lang Lang.
“I can only work with soloists who are ready to collaborate with me on a concept, and very seldom have I experienced a reading of the work that developed so quickly.”
The first part of two was recorded in the spring of 2014, in the Goldener Saal of Vienna’s Musikverein. The recording features Lang Lang and maestro Harnoncourt performing Mozart’s two famous piano concerti, K. 453 in G Major and K. 491 in C minor, with the Vienna Phil.
The second portion features three early piano sonatas: Rondo alla turca, the "Allegro" in F Major K. 1c and the Konzertstück in F Major, K. 33b.
Sony will also release a live performance of Lang Lang live at the Royal Albert Hall on DVD and Blu-Ray this fall. Said DVD includes the full concert of three Mozart sonatas (K. 282, K. 283 and K. 310, respectively).
