Apparently Baltimore Ravens owner Steve Bisciotti is so concerned with Ray Rice that he almost let his team and the NFL disintegrate rather than punish the player who viciously beat his spouse in a casino elevator. Reportedly, Ravens Coach John Harbaugh wanted to cut Rice immediately following the incident, but the powers that be prevented him from firing Rice.
Ravens owner Steve Bisciotti, in a press conference this week, put on a disgusting display of indifference. His obligatory apologies were negated by his glib remarks about the financial repercussions for Rice and his wife. Geez, rich white people- they don't get it!
Bisciotti's master stroke, though, was when he warned NFL players to watch their backs for gold-digging opportunists- because that's the lesson that really needs to be learned here (via New York Times):
"Be paranoid. Say to yourself, 'Tonight's the night someone's going to put me in a bad situation.' It's really healthy to be paranoid when you're out and about."
According to another report, Ravens coach John Harbaugh was so repulsed by what he saw that he wanted to get rid of Rice immediately. But he works for other people, so the decision was ultimately out of his hands (via Washington Post):
"Coach John Harbaugh wanted to cut Rice from the team after seeing the outside-elevator video that shows Rice dragging his then-fiancee out of the elevator unconscious, but was prohibited from doing so by Ravens General Manager Ozzie Newsome, who was backed by Bisciotti and Cass."
