Former Ravens running back Ray Rice was reportedly upfront and accurate when describing his account of what happened with Janay Palmer in the elevator of an Atlantic City casino in February. Contrary to what NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell may have implied, Rice did not lie or mislead anyone during the investigation. Before the video of Rice beating his fiancée/wife surfaced, the NFL had only suspended him for two games.
As bad as what Ray Rice did was, there is an even more insidious evil at play when people at the top of the food chain actively tried to cover it up. Whether anyone saw the video or had the ability to see it, it doesn't matter. Rice's account, by all accounts, accurately reflected what happened that night (via SB Nation):
"Ray owned it from day one... He went in as if (the tape) existed. Everyone knew it existed. He knew if the commissioner hadn't already seen it, he would see it... Ray didn't lie to the commissioner...He told the full truth to Goodell -- he made it clear he had hit her, and he told Goodell he was sorry and that it wouldn't happen again."
NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell has done so much backtracking over the last three weeks, he may as well start moonwalking. While verbally taking responsibility for the league's failure to properly address this issue, the silver-tongued Goodell always seems to leave himself an out (via ABC News):
"At our best, the NFL sets an example that makes a positive difference. Unfortunately over the past several weeks we have seen all too much of the NFL doing wrong and that starts with me. We will re-examine, enhance and improve all of our current programs and then we'll do more."
