The cosmic philosophy behind Sun Ra never seems to falter as he, "of the Angel Race from Saturn" and prolific songwriter of over 1,000 in his repertoire continues to reign supreme. And with a forthcoming LP from the Sun Ra Arkestra, now is as a good time as ever to crack into his massive backlog.
It's been written before, but earlier this year the Sun Ra centenary was paid tribute with an onslaught of 21 new albums having been made available via digital music source iTunes.
The batch included music recorded between 1965 and 1974 and among them were essential mainstays of any Ra library.
And now, on the special occasion of Ra's 100th birthday, In the Orbit of Ra: Arkestra Reflections takes a deeper look into the Sun Ra psyche. He may not have been a part of this world, but he was surely a force on it.
Anecdotes to the doc include testimonies from collaborators and friends including Marshall Allen, Danny Ray Thompson, Michael Ray and Knoel Scott.
