Sleepy Hollow, a new musical by Michael Sgouros and Brenda Bell, begins previews tomorrow night, September 20, 2014, at the Off-Broadway Players Theater in Greenwich Village.
This musical adaptation of Washington Irving's 2010 tale officially opens October 4 and runs through November 9. It tells the story of the ill-fated Ichabod Crane and the events leading to his fatal chase with the Headless Horseman. In the process it explores "the local folk of this enchanted Hollow; exposing their fears as well as their flaws, offering a slice of this early American Dutch community as tasty as Lady Van Tassel's wicked apple pie."
Says playwright Bell, "I wanted to stay true to all the story elements while digging deeper into the characters themselves. I wanted to know why Ichabod Crane was so cold--so hollow."
Bell directs a cast of 10 that includes Timothy Bartlett as Ichabod Crane, Jonathan Bethea as Hans van Ripper and Meghan Miles as Katrina van Tassel. Sgouros, the composer, a Julliard-trained percussionist and also the music director, notes that two percussionists (Sgouros being one) play more than 30 instruments over the course of the show.
A cast album has already been released.
