The spirit of the mod 1960s is alive and well at the Theatre for the New City on Avenue E. Say hello to Nico: Underground, the story of the famed Velvet Underground darling and Andy Warhol’s muse.
Directed by Michael Schirallia, starring Tammy Faye Starlite and written by T. D. Lang (aka Starlite) the show is one part concert, one part a fictionalized version of a radio interview from Melbourne in 1986, just a few years before Nico’s death. Starlite performs with Jeff Ward as the interviewer as they recreate actual encounters Nico had with journalists, based on the text by T. D. Lang.
Starlite worked for nearly four years crafting the script from original videos, interviews, biographies and rare recordings as well as first person interviews with those who personally knew Nico.
The show includes performance of songs by former Velvet Underground god Lou Reed, Jim Morrison, Jackson Browne, David Bowie, Gordon Lightfoot, Bob Dylan, Rogers and Hart as well as Nico’s own compositions. The classic tunes are performed by a backing band including Keith Hartel on bass and guitar, Richard Feridun on guitar, Ron Miracle Metz on drums, Dave Dunton on keyboard and Craig Hoek on sax and flute.
The '60s icon was born Christina Paffagen in pre-war Cologne, Germany who later became the new New York scene. Nico: Underground is the world's first and only Sturm und Drang jukebox musical.
The show will run from Sept. 28 and you can buy tickets here.
