Stephen Colbert just featured his youngest talent to date — Brooklyn tween head-bangers Unlocking the Truth, who talked everything from their upcoming EP Free As You Wanna Be to how they don't take kindly to middle school.
A studded trio (because that's all you need to play metal, right?) the group just signed a major two-album recording contract with Sony for a whopping $1.8 million. As perhapd the richest kids on the playground, they are worth their fee.
Face-melting guitar runs, heavy bass and drum synchronization — don't take this band lightly. They pull it off with ease, looking as if the band has done this time and time again.
Getting some face time on Colbert, too, can only do big things for the band. While they may have seemed bashful and withdrawn from Stephen firing questions their way, they kept a certain poise that was almost becoming.
Looking like the coolest hardcore band around, they echo an earlier sonic quality very similar to Jamaican punk band Bad Brains. The guitarist slash singer, Malcolm Brickhouse, has an aesthetic not unlike Kurt Cobain or even those cool kids in 5 Seconds of Summer (yet Unlocking The Truth has a better edge).
So take it for what it is, a band of highly talented youths who were given a chance not many youngsters get nowadays. Just be wary of who you become in later years, boys.
Hats off to them, here they are performing "Monster" below.
