A musical based on regular people's discarded notes and letters might seem an odd idea, but with a book co-written by Hunter Bell, one of the men responsible for the equally offbeat [title of show], Found might just find legs. The tuner begins previews today, opens October 14 and and plays a limited, eight-week Off-Broadway engagement through November 9, 2014 at Atlantic Theater Company's Linda Gross Theater, 336 West 20th Street, NYC.
Tony Award nominee Hunter Bell ([title of show]) and Lee Overtree wrote the book and Eli Bolin the music and original lyrics to the new musical "based on scores of surprising and eccentric discarded notes and letters that have been 'found' in the real world by every-day people." Based on Davy Rothbart's Found books and magazines and with additional material created in collaboration with Story Pirates, it's directed by Overtree and stars Nick Blaemire (Godspell and Cry-Baby on Broadway) as the lost and broke "Davy" who, finding a revealing note meant for someone else, gets a wacky idea that leads him and his friends on a "wild, comedic journey."
The cast also features Barrett Wilbert Weed, who starred in the recent Off-Broadway production of Heathers: The Musical, and Christina Anthony, Andrew Call, Daniel Everidge, Orville Mendoza, Betsy Morgan, Molly Pope, Danny Pudi and Sandy Rustin.
Rothbart, a writer, editor and filmmaker, created the magazine Found to highlight discarded notes, letters, flyers, photos, drawings and lists found and sent in by readers. It has since spawned three books. The magazine's online archives going back to 2001 have "found stuff" including "love letters, birthday cards, kids’ homework, to-do lists, ticket stubs, poetry on napkins, doodles--anything that gives a glimpse into someone else's life. Anything goes."
Anyone can go too, as theatergoers have a chance to "find" free tickets to Found via a lottery held through a smartphone app.
