Classicalite is up-to-date with regional dance phenoms — most recently dealing with Memphis street dancers and a new style they call "jookin." Lil Buck, a dancer from the area, specializes in jookin and is known for his viral video of him performing interpretive dance to Camille Saint-Saëns's The Swan, accompanied by Yo-Yo Ma.
Memphis jookin is a predecessor to the Detroit jit, where the latter borrows from the Memphis section of street choreography. However, Lil Buck's form of the jook is fittingly his own (and doing interpretive dance to classical tunes is not your normal stage for street composers).
Lil Buck caught up with Daniel Borris at The New York Times and talked about some of his favorite things that keep him dancing and inspired.
