Adrian Peterson Deactivated For Child Abuse, Hit His Kid with a Switch After Infant Son Murdered

Amid the flurry of NFL conduct-related scandals blitzing the news cycle, one stood out this weekend. Vikings running back Adrian Peterson was deactivated for Sunday's game against New England after news broke that he was indicted for child abuse. Peterson reportedly went too far when disciplining his son by beating him with a switch which led to cuts and bruising. Prosecutors want to go after him, citing a previous incident in which Peterson allegedly inadvertently injured another of his kids, causing the boy to hit and bruise his head on a car seat while Peterson was spanking him. All of that would be bad enough, but one would think he would be a little more tender and caring for his children, especially since his infant son was murdered last year.

Yesterday, Vikings General manager Rick Spielman defended the team's decision to let Peterson play this Sunday against New Orleans (via New York Times):

"This is a difficult path to navigate regarding the judgment of how a parent disciplines his child. We believe he deserves to play while the legal process plays out."

Peterson seemed to acknowledge that he went too far in a recent statement, but defended himself against the methods he uses to discipline his children.

"I am not a perfect son. I am not a perfect husband. I am not a perfect parent, but I am, without a doubt, not a child abuser."

Reports have surfaced since the indictment alleging that Peterson had already been in hot water previously for injuring one of his other kids while spanking him, in which the child hit his head on his own car seat.

Apparently, early reports failed to include the fact that no charges were ever filed regarding that incident and any investigation was abandoned (via SB Nation):

"The allegation of another investigation into Adrian Peterson is simply not true. The allegation is more than one year old and authorities took no action. An adult witness admittedly insists Adrian did nothing inappropriate with his son."
