Even the Bellas can't ruin the awesome chemistry that AJ Lee and Divas Champion Paige have. After highlighting the mismatch in character depth and mic skills two weeks ago, AJ and Paige were back to their mind games last week on Raw. This time they featured as tag team partners against Natalya and Rosa Mendes. Leading up to Night of Champions, The pale English Muffin and CM Punk's wife built their feud up even more. This week the edge definitely went to AJ.
The psychological war between AJ and Paige is becoming one of the great all-time feuds in WWE history, and that's no exaggeration. The left-handed compliments, the kisses and beat downs, the "respect" each has for the other is very entertaining, and yet when they get in the ring it's even better.
For example, the fact that the two go so far out of their way to play nice with one another means they can be rivals and tag team partners simultaneously. This often leads to one or the other try to one up their partner while squashing whatever irrelevant opponents may be in the opposite corner. They somehow manage to work well together despite constantly undermining each other.
If it weren't for the likelihood that AJ is headed for a feud with Stephanie McMahon, I would say that the Pai-J (pronounced Pay-Jay) program should last forever. That said, it will be interesting to see how that plays out. AJ already planted the seeds during the aforementioned Bellas segment, which was half awesome and half awful (you guess which part was which). Lee stared down the boss lady, demanding that she be recognized as the rightful number one contender to the Title.
AJ vs. Steph also has the added value of the tons of subtext concerning Lee's husband CM Punk, who unceremoniously left the company in January. Fans know this, and that simple fact adds to the drama even without mentioning it on camera.
