There are only four days left to support artist Jeff Stark’s Kickstarter campaign for his site-specific performance piece, The Dreary Coast--taking place on and along the superfund site that is southwest Brooklyn's Gowanus Canal.
The premise of the performance surrounds the character Charon, a boatman out on River Styx. Stark’s latest work features elements of black metal, Greek and Roman myths and tidbits of Dante's Inferno.
"The neighborhood is changing so fast, and I’m glad that you can't get away with throwing benzene in the canal anymore,” said Stark, who has lived near the canal for 15 years.
“But it's important to me that in this neighborhood, that some of that sense of possibility and wildness remains for the artists, the creative people, and the weirdoes who have always lived around here.”
The two small performances per night will feature audience members running into actors and performers at bridges, docks and buildings along the canal and throughout the neighborhood.
Stark is no stranger to guerilla art, as he is the man behind last year’s illegal party in an abandoned DUMBO subway station.
"There’s so much that could go wrong with a show like this,” Stark reminded of the project's potential to go south.
“It takes place in public space. On a boat. Along one of America's most polluted waterways--a superfund site with a much-needed clean-up in progress."
The goal is to raise $24,000 for the production of the project.
The Kickstarter fundraiser ends Friday, September 19.
You can back the project for a mere dollar. In return, you have the chance at a handmade zine, black metal buttons or two tickets to Title:Point theater company's The Mind King show at Silent Barn.
