Five of our favorite major ballet companies will participate in the live stream event World Ballet Day on October 1. The 20-hour-long live streaming event presents a behind-the-scenes look at the company classes, rehearsals and coaching.
Featured in the event are: the Australian Ballet, the Bolshoi Ballet, the National Ballet of Canada, the Royal Ballet and the San Francisco Ballet.
In four-hour slots, beginning at 12 p.m. Melbourne time, the stream will move through continents and time zones to Moscow, London, Toronto and San Francisco. To access the live stream, simply look to YouTube (during and after the event) and on each ballet company’s website.
A live forum has been set up for stream viewers to ask questions and interact with each company. In addition, ballet fans are invited to film and submit themselves doing a pirouette for a chance to appear in a short film.
The event is a project of Royal Ballet Live, 2012’s nine-hour streaming event that warranted the Royal Ballet about 2.5 million views on YouTube. The purpose of the stream is, of course, for audience engagement. According to a representative for the company, the Royal Ballet initiated and financed the project.
