As WWE continues to unfurl part after part of their new documentary The Monday Night War, one big question looms: where the heck is Sting? His presence in WCW during the NWO angle was largely downplayed in early episodes, which leads me to conclude that he will receive a much more in-depth treatment. Will this expected retrospective be timed to coincide with the Stinger's anticipated return to wrestling? Will WWE give fans a whole episode of historical perspective of Crow-Era Sting?
If you haven't already checked out the new documentary series The Monday Night War on WWE Network, do so immediately. Although much of it is culled from the 2004 documentary DVD of the same name, the new 20-part series delves into much deeper detail.
For example, after setting the stage and telling the story through a big picture lens, the show started focusing on individuals that played crucial roles in the war, like Degeneration X and Mick Foley.
Although the piece as a whole kind of works out to be incredibly biased in favor of Vince McMahon (after all, the winners tend to write the history books) it would be hard to imagine the series carrying on for 20 episodes without mentioning the legendary runs of Sting, Diamond Dallas Page, Bill Goldberg and the great innovations that WCW brought to the table like the high-flying luchadores and cruiserweight division.
The NWO wouldn't have lasted nearly as long as they did without the eerie, mystical presence of Sting watching from the rafters. The character that Sting evolved into over that period became as beloved as his original surfer gimmick, and since WWE are courting him so heavily, I anticipate that future installments of The Monday Night War at least attempt to balance the storytelling.
WWE may have won the war, but it was a lot closer than the documentary may lead you to believe.
