Defying the odds of ballet's elite youngsters comes a new show all the way from across the pond in London at Sadler's Wells. The Elixir festival, as it's called, will host a unique performance--featuring ballet dancers strictly between the ages of 54 to 70.
From the vision of Jane Hackett, director of creative learning at Sadler's, the festival celebrates the life of the dancer and what it means to continue ballet well beyond the years deemed suitable for a performer.
While many ballet companies may maintain as rank of young performers, Namron Yarrum and eight other seniors make a statement that the dancer is never too old for their craft. In fact, it only becomes more enjoyable with age.
The festival will take place over four days and will feature a range of performances on Wells' main stage and in the Lilian Baylis Studio.
Contributing artists include Mats Ek performing alongside Ana Laguna, Dominique Mercy in a new piece directed by Pascal Merighi, a cast of former professional dancers in a co-creation by Jonathan Burrows and Matteo Fargion and Sadler's Wells' Company of Elders performing the choreography of Associate Artist Hofesh Shechter according to their website.
Workshops will also be held in addition to the performances on September 12-15.
The life of the dancer shouldn't be marred by the fleetingness of time. Instead, The Elixir festival proves it's only better in the long run.
