Lincoln Center's White Light Festival has come a long way from its inception in 2010. A spiritual journey inward, the festival returns this season with a similar imagination.
The fifth installment of an ongoing tradition, the gala runs October 7 to November 11 at various New York City locations, which includes 13 programs and an ending discussion.
Simon Rattle will be the opener, conducting the Berlin Philharmonic and the Radio Choir Berlin in the American premiere of his staged version of Bach's St. Matthew Passion, which will be directed by Peter Sellars.
Since the opening performance bas been in high demand, a rehearsal will be open to the public for those who can't procure tickets. The working rehearsal will be held at the Park Avenue Armory on October 4 at 10:30 a.m. and again at 2:30 p.m. Those who are able to get in, the premiere will be held October 7 at Drill Hall, Park Avenue Armory.
To sum up the festival's overall thesis, a performance will be held at Alice Tully Hall on November 11, featuring baritone Matthias Goerne and pianist Markus Hinterhaüser in Schubert's song cycle Winterreise.
As music is inherently an intangible experience, arguably paralleling an inward journey not unlike a spiritual awakening, White Lights Fest, thus, can be your compass to those sonic worlds untraveled.
A festival that has yet to disappoint in its four-year run, information be found on their website here.
In the meantime, here's Sir Rattle with the Berlin Philharmonic.
Update: This post previously stated that the opening performance on October 7 was the onyl performance. There will be a two part dress hearsal to accommodate limited availability.
