People Like Us, also known as Vicki Bennett, will present a live performance of "Consequences (One Thing Leads To Another)" and "Notations - a film for live improvisers" featuring M.C. Schmidt (Matmos) and Jason Willett.
The September 13 event will take place in the brand spanking new WMFU performance space, Monty Hall and is supported by Baltimore's High Zero Festival.
Nearly a year has passed since WFMU reclaimed the ground floor space of their building at 43 Montgomery Street in Jersey City, NJ. The grand opening on July 12 featured performances by Pampers, Watery Love, Doug Gillard and Spectre Folk opening the flood gates for innovative and off the cuff performances of all mediums and genres.
Thus, welcome People Like Us. British artist and WFMU DJ Vicki Bennett has been creating art and music under the People Like Us moniker since 1991. Her aesthetic is comprised of crafted audio and video collages dubbed over repurposed pre-existing footage in an effort to critique popular culture.
“The subject of authenticity, the “original” in relation to the “copy” (coming from the word “copia”, meaning multitude and abundance) interest me as an artist working in the field of collage and appropriation,” said Bennett on the creation of her piece Consequences.
While Consequences is a sonic and visual mosaic to the game of Exquisite Corpse by the Surrealists; “Notations” is a film for live performance by improvising musicians and artists. Bennett used collected and edited found footage from hundreds of different films for the project. Notions is performed with a score, or list of instructions to be translated into sound.
