Rumors are once again flying that Kendra Wilkinson and husband Hank Baskett are headed towards divorce, following claims that Hank hooked up with a transgendered YouTube model. While the affair has yet to be confirmed (by anyone other than Kendra's mom), it has spotlighted the controversy surrounding the term "tranny."
The debate over the use of the word "tranny" certainly isn't a new one, but it has been getting a lot of attention lately. Much of this is due to the ongoing saga of Kendra Wilkinson and Hank Baskett.
Shortly after the birth of their youngest child, Hank was accused of repeatedly hooking up with a transgendered model. As a result, numerous media outlets referred to the young woman as a "tranny."
As it turns out, this is an unacceptable term within the LGBT community. This is something former boy bander and gay activist Lance Bass has been talking about since 2011.
In an op-ed for the Huffington Post, Bass explains why we shouldn't say "tranny" and describes why it's an offensive term:
"I have learned, thanks to Glaad.org's website, that the term "tranny" is used as a dehumanizing slur to describe transgender individuals and is oftentimes the last word someone hears before they are brutally attacked. Similar to the anti-gay F-word, the term 'tranny' is commonly used to humiliate and degrade transgender individuals."
Unfortunately, that hasn't stopped a number of major publications from using the terms, especially when speaking about Hank and Kendra's alleged marital woes.
This proves true for even Kendra's mom, Patti, who has been opening up to all of the major tabloids. Confirming that her daughter was cheated on, Patti told the September 8 print edition of OK! Magazine that she's been cut out of Kendra's life:
"Just days before I was picking her up of the floor, and then she can't even tell me she's going to see her father who left us? Not to mention that she went with a guy who just cheated on her with a tranny? That hurts a lot."
