Michael Sam has been invited to appear on next week's episode of Monday Night Raw, WWE's flagship program. The wrestling organization is no stranger to famous athletes. Mike Tyson, as well as Floyd Mayweather, William "The Refrigerator" Perry, Muhammad Ali, and dozens of others have appeared on wrestling programs, usually during Wrestlemania. However, WWE has offered Sam, who is openly gay, the chance to speak his mind on an open mic after being cut by the St. Louis Rams.
Some observers are concerned that this is a one-sided deal. WWE has a lot to gain from Sam's appearance, while it could be potentially damaging to Sam if he wants to get picked up by another team (via CBS Sports):
"Although showing up on Monday Night Raw probably wouldn't make any sense for Sam, the offer makes plenty of sense on Vince McMahon's end. The WWE owner is known for outrageous stunts and what better way to go up against Monday Night Football next week than airing an interview with Sam."
Nevertheless, Stephanie McMahon, both an owner and on-screen entity in the wrestling promotion, made a big show of support for Sam in an open letter to the young NFL hopeful this week (via Bleacher Report):
"Exhibiting class and dignity rarely shown in professional sports, Michael Sam, WWE invites you to next Monday's Raw to speak of your struggles to succeed, lessons you have learned along the way, the courage it takes to be yourself and the prospects of your continued journey."
From a purely spectator's point of view, it would be awesome to see what Sam might do and say. Would he get involved in an angle, or just make a celebrity appearance? In what unforeseeable ways could WWE screw it up?
