The Oakland Raiders have named rookie QB Derek Carr the starter. While head coach Dennis Allen says it was a tough decision, the first-year quarterback has shown a lot in the preseason. Elsewhere on the roster, rookie TJ Carrie will be returning punts as well as forming the final link in their secondary's nickel package.
Many people might have expected veteran quarterback Matt Schaub to start. However, the young second round draft pick Derek Carr impressed coaches already (via USA Today):
"'A lot of factors that were involved in that. It's not an indictment on Matt Schaub at all,' head coach Dennis Allen said Monday evening. 'I think it says more about where we feel Derek Carr is in his progression.'"
On the rookie front, TJ Carrie will be primarily expected to take care of punt returns, but he will also have other responsibilities than just special teams (via Silver and Black Pride):
While TJ Carrie will be the nickel corner, he is also the team's primary punt returner. He earned it with two big punt returns this preseason of 50 and 45 yards.
