After the public uproar over NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell's decision to suspend Baltimore Ravens running back Ray Rice for just two games after being arrested for assault, Goodell has answered with a stiff new policy regarding domestic abuse. The commissioner announced Thursday that effective immediately, offenders will automatically be suspended for six games. A second offense will result in banishment from the League.
Commissioner Goodell admitted that his response to the Ray Rice incident was a mistake, and accordingly introduced the new policy, which is much more stringent (via Washington Post):
"My disciplinary decision led the public to question our sincerity, our commitment, and whether we understood the toll that domestic violence inflicts on so many families. I take responsibility both for the decision and for ensuring that our actions in the future reflect our values."
Goodell's public attempt to right this wrong may be a purely business move, as surely some critics will point to, but sometimes motives don't matter when a good thing happens (via SB Nation):
"... The NFL is a leader, that we do stand for important values, and that we can project those values in ways that have a positive impact beyond professional football."
